This project provides rural landowners with the skills and knowledge to better manage nutrient inputs and improve the condition of the natural resources in the nationally recognised Vasse-Geographe and Peel-Harvey coastal hotspots.
The Department of Agriculture and Food WA (DAFWA) has identified a gap in their Fertiliser Action Plan Extension Program for small landowners (with properties up to 100 ha in size) and this project contributed towards the development of extension materials for this group. A significant contribution was also made by SWCC to Western Dairy for the development of a ‘fertiliser decision aid tool’ and educational DVD to assist rural landholders to make well informed fertiliser management decisions.
Workshops were also run by SWCC in partnership with DAFWA to increase awareness of issues related to small property planning and management. The contribution of excess nutrients into waterways by horses is well documented. SWCC engaged the DAFWA Small Landholder Information Service to run the ‘Happy Horses Healthy Environment’ workshop series across the region to improve knowledge and skills in the local equestrian industry.
